Welcome!

In order to really understand any people and time period, it's important to look, not just at secondary sources, but at primary sources as well. Rather than having you purchase an expensive supplemental reader for this class, I will post here links to some important primary sources online. For most class sessions, I will ask you to comment here on a selection particularly relevant to what we will be discussing in class.

To get started, here's a test of the History 152 blog system. If you don't already have one, you can create for yourself a Google account by following the instructions at https://accounts.google.com. Blogger is linked to Google, and you *should* be able to use the Google account attached to your NSU e-mail address.  That doesn't always work, and you may have to set up an independent account.

You can post as an anonymous blogger if you prefer.  However, to make sure you get credit, be sure to add your name to the end of any comment you add to a blog post.

Here's a test of the blogging system.  Click on the "comments" link below, and answer each of the following questions:
  1. What figure from American history do you find the most interesting? Why?
  2. What is the most important thing you learned in your high school American history classes?
  3. What historical time period most interests you? Why?

  1. 1. The most interesting figure from American History for me would have to be Abraham Lincoln. It might be influenced by the fact that there is so much information about him, and how much he is talked about in high school history classes. I find it inspiring how he grew up and overcame all of his differences.
    2. I think the most important thing I learned in my high school American history class was about the bill of rights. I understand my rights as a citizen much more because of what I was taught in that class.
    3. I find parts of all time periods interesting. I find the engineering techniques of the Ancient Egyptians interesting. I find bits and pieces of each period interesting, all the way up to the beginning of modern technology in the 1900's. If I had to pick a certain time period it would be the early 1900's, because I can relate to what happened then.

    1. My favorite figures in American history have to be the Wright brothers because I like the history of American inventions and ingenuity.
    2. The most important thing I learned in high school history class is probably how important it is to learn from past mistakes as we seem to be unable to learn from them and continue to make the same ones over and over even to this day.
    3. The parts of history I find the most interesting are parts of recent history, and the more obscure bits of history in far away places because I feel that my history classes where extremely lacking in those areas and I'm a little tired of hearing about the American revolution in every single class and nothing else.

  3. 1. The person I find the most interesting is Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was able to bring the country out of the Depression, even after all the damage that Hoover caused the economy.
    2. One of the most important things that I learned in high school American history is that the Cold War wasn't actually an on going war, but the Vietnam and Korean war was apart of it.
    3. The time period that interests me the most is World War II. It was so sad to see that our world could be so damaged and so full of hate, yet we overcame that. The world right now is not at its greatest, but it is better today than ever before.

  4. 1. The most interesting figure from American history for me would have to be Martin Luther King Jr. He stood up for what he believed in and that's what I do. He made self sacrifices to makes others lives easier or more complex and complained little to not complaining at all.
    2. The most interesting thing I learned in my high school american history class would have to be learning the bill of rights, the constitution, and all the laws. The only reason I liked them was because after I learned them I used them against my teacher and well lets just say the teacher said she regretted teaching me them.
    3. World War 1 and World War 2 are my two most main topics I find interesting, I love war stories and I have always been interesting on learning more about Pearl Harbor and the Holocaust, and how Stalin and Hitler were so different but yet so alike.

  5. 1. I think the most interesting figure from American History would be Martin Luther King Jr. He had a big influence on the Civil Rights Movement, and his "I Have a Dream" speech is very well known even though he was one of the last speakers, and that speech was impromptu.

    2. I think the most important things I learned in my American History class were the amendments, because I feel that we should know what they are.

    3. I think my most favorite time period in American History is World War II. It interests me because the women had to take over the men's position and they did not think they could do that. I also really like learning about the war because that was the first time we had used and atomic bomb.

  6. 1. Andrew Johnson has always interested me because he was a terrible president. He was a racist alcoholic that vetoed almost everything that the Senate sent to him.
    2. One of the most important things that I've learned from my history classes is that not everything is written in the text books. They printed things that people wanted to hear. They didn't always go into detail when it came to the bad things in history.
    3. One of my favorite times in history was the Civil War. It always amazed me that they fought each other over something that was so wrong to begin with.

  7. 1. I would have to say the most interesting figure from American History is John Rockfeller. The reason for this was his intelligence in the economical field. Its amazing how he pretty much over took almost the whole oil industry in a matter of years.
    2. The most important thing I learned in American History class is that in its entirety, its the US's fault for all of the immigrants taking jobs today.
    3. The Holocaust definitely interests me the most in history. The reason for this is of how inhumane Germany treated the Jewish population and other minorities. I find the techniques they used most interesting, not because they are good, but because of the ruthlessness.

  8. 1. The person i found the most interesting in American History is Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was able to overcome poliomyelitis and during his presidential terms he was able to hide disability. When he came into office he gave people faith that the nation will over come the Depression.
2.I learned that history repeats itself.
3.I liked learning about World War II, because it had such a huge impact on today's world.
